Match Report/Information
Well, another undersubscribed evening with Masham only able to field nine players. Anyone would think the two senior sides were brim-full of top order batsmen with hundreds of runs to their name such is the distinct lack of enthusiasm for twenty overs at the crease. If only! So it was with nine players and a frail middle and lower order that Masham elected to bat. Not a great decision especially as soon as the two captains returned to the pavilion, the heavens opened to spice things up a bit. The top order was back in the hutch for five runs which exposed the soft underbelly of the middle order, Falshaw and the start of the tail, Smart. Watchfully, the ginger twins started a cautious and measured approach to get at least a handful of runs on the board at which to bowl. Falshaw got his eye in and biffed a few sixes, Smart's nose began to bleed at 11 runs as he reached unheard-of double figures. Gradually the score crept up to 70 then 80 and approaching 90, umpire Sturdy chose to continue the weekend's theme of rotten decisions. Total guesswork. And a batsmen who, in the past, has been criticised for walking! Ridiculous. The measured approach ceased to be and suddenly an achieveable 100 looked a long way off.
As it happened, even 100 was never going to be enough. The bowler friendly wicket of the first half proved to be a batting paradise particularly with some friendly pies chucked up the hill from Smart in the first over. Layfield got his eye in early and filled his boots. Some pretty ordinary fielding summed-up Masham's night and apart from the apathy shown by those who won't play, the game was up with a bad decision at the toss. Sorry, chaps!
Top banter from the Mavs, a nice little ground and a glorious summer's evening. Here's to next week's selection headache!
