Match Report/Information

Sportsmanship: 10
Man of the Match: Aston 13-3

Brompton won the toss on an uncharacteristically sunny May evening at the Rec. Not since 2011 have we seen such delightful playing conditions and BOS batters J "Above-the-rest" Heads and M "Lofty" Ingram set about the Masham bowling attack with some winter-frustration gusto. When I say attack, think not of a massed cavalry charge at Sevastopol, but more of a stag-do paintball skirmish. As the ball disappeared to all corners, Crocodile Williams started swinging his arms by way of signal, nay, demand, that skipper Sturdy consider the Geelong Giant for a spell.

At the first bowling change BOSCC had already amassed a mighty 50 odd from just 6 overs yet a few half-paced grenades from Williams slowed the rate a little and whipped out Heads' off peg and sent it cartwheeling dangerously towards Jones. Williams bemoaned the restricted run-up but normal service will resume on saturday when he'll be pushing off the Thornton sight-screens.

Golden-arm Flashart despatched Ingram for a handy 24 but had already picked-up a cricked neck watching the cherry repeatedly sail cow-ward. Our intrepid strawberry-blond collected another injury later in the game to cap-off a week of dismal luck but to turn out after being laid-up for so long is a measure of his committment to the Wednesday team. There's no I in Edward Falshaw.

And then the surprise package: A coming of age for Isaac Jones; he's binned the leg-spin in favour of more manly seam, winkled out Lain for 25 and finished with impressive figures of 11-1. A little work on the handshake which surely makes a wilted tulip seem firm, and he's approaching manhood. Equally impressive was Wednesday debutant Daniel Paddison; Sturdy didn't so much throw him in at the deep end asking him to bowl at the death against the BOSCC top order, as tie a concrete block to each leg and kick him off the 10m board. But Paddison rose to the challenge. Forget the odd wide, as Paddison grows ever taller, he's the future of Masham's seam attack.

So BOSCC closed on 136. Ginger dynamo Tomlins and newblood Chris Smith showed some steel and were seemingly building a partnership when Smith smashed the case off it straight to the keeper's outstretched right glove for catch of the match. Enter Williams. Dots started to amass, the fielding side aware that if Williams connected with any of the expansive shots he was playing they would be fishing around in the Ure. At last Williams connected with one; a dab to short cover. Delighted that he's finally made contact: "Yes!" cries our optimistic antipodean and embarks on a giraffe-like 22 yards. "Shit!" replies Tomlin as he dutifully sets-off from the non-striker's end to barely make half way before being run-out...

Tomlins' martyrdom brought McCourt to the crease; a man in form though you wouldn't tell from his general level of inexcitement. Under strict instruction to run the Aussie out if he tried any more suicidal runs, McCourt went about his innings in a businesslike manner. Williams tried to smash another one to Catterick but this one was straight and for the second time a stump was cartwheeling.

All the time, BOSCC were backing-up their bowling with elphin-like fielding. If Masham's was like a coastal frieghter trying to navigate Britain's inland waterways on a dank day in November, BOSCC was a beautifully laquered speedboat on Lake Garda in high summer. And there the innings stuttered to a halt; the middle order seniors couldn't replicate their saturday form, Aston and Tiplady sharing the wickets and BOSCC took the spoils by 50ish runs.

But it's great to have Wednesday nights back on the calendar! Roll on next week!
