Match Report/Information

Man of the Match: Adam Langhorne

After what seems like three years of playing regularly at Richmond under cloudy skies, mid-June saw this year's first trip to Richmond for Masham in glorious summer sun. Just as everyone else had shirked responsibility for organising a team, so the team of prospective captains melted away at the toss, ushering forward the reluctant Smart. A great toss to win, you'd think, and being truly democratic on a Wednesday, the team, particularly Broadley and Williams, shouted loudest and elected to bowl. Smart's back was hurting just looking at the pitch. Masham took the field and were reminded how big Richmond is particularly with just ten men; some dismal excuses earlier in the day from being at a race meet, to working in Wetherby, to having got back from holiday (?), to not being back in time (yet managing to get to a net in Masham), meant the committed ten would each be doing a little bit more running.

After Broadley's first over Smart was demanding an end to namby-pamby politics in the dressing room and a return to hard-line dictatorship; it was going to be a long 20 overs of cherry-chasing. An early wicket cheered Broadley up but he still optimistically added up a 4, a 3 and another 4 to get just 9. Hardly acceptable by his recent standards but Smart stuck with him and matters improved. In the twelfth over. Meanwhile at the other end, Williams was proving that Australia have totally lost the power of sport; he was later seen writing a postcard home, "I thought Masham was a road but, streuth, I'm looking forward to batting on this track..."

Masham had plenty of bowling options but in the circumstances in-form Jones and junior McCourt bowled the last eight; unfortunately Richmond's top order still remained and despite the retirements of Richmond's seniors, the practice will be useful to them ahead of the NYSD Div 1 fixture on Saturday. Richmond were restricted to just 181. Easy.

The Smiths opened the innings, hitting the ball to all corners including the cemetery gates. (Is this joke funny anymore?) and they seemed to be rattling along with few troubles until having just been walloped for two boundaries, Charlton bowled Andrew Smith for a 19 ball 24. Having spent his day with his fellow boffin, Chris Smith couldn't bear to be apart and departed next over for a useful 29 to diminutive Langhorne who was to become a thorn in Masham's side. In-form McCourt, came and went bringing newly promoted Smart who on 24 chanceless runs from just 16 balls was given out caught off his pad having hit his boot with the bat (maybe the ball tickled the bat on the way through, maybe he hit the case off it) In his new role as a batsman he stood his ground petulantly waiting for the umpire to make a decision; "What are you waiting for?", asked umpire Smith, without a hint of irony...

Masham had given themselves a chance: 81 for 3 with just 100 needed off 7 and plenty of wickets left. But it wasn't to be. A rapid clatter of Langhorne wickets saw the mother and father of all collapses to 83 all out. Williams' words didn't exactly come back to haunt him; he did indeed score some runs.

Saturday's another day.

Thanks to everyone for turning out at such short notice, AB for scoring, McD's for the milkshakes on the way back.
