Match Report/Information

Wagon batted first and got off to a slow start with only 8 coming off the first four overs with the loss of two wickets. P Allan came to the crease after the first wicket, but was kept quiet early on due to some tight bowling, especially from D Oldham, on a difficult batting track with a long, lush outfield. Two more wickets fell cheaply with each batter not getting to grips with the early season wicket. P. Lumb came to the crease and played an excellent holding role while P. Allan started to open up a little picking up the odd boundary here and there and having to retire on 55. Some excellent spin bowling from D. Brown kept P. Allan one end tight and saw the falling of 4 quick wickets before taking his fifth wicket, that of a returning P. Allan to a well thought out delivery, to close the Wagon innings on 91.
Watlass didn’t get off to the best of starts losing their first wicket from the very first ball of their innings to an in swinging Yorker from M. Tweddle, who was to take 2 more, not what you want first up. Wickets tumbled periodically and Watlass provided some threat with the actions of A.Cooper, but when he fell trapped plumb in front Watlass began to struggle. With some tight bowling, from the returning J Corner and P Lumb, and fielding Watlass never really looked like chasing the 92 they needed to win and ended up falling 36 short on 55.
It’s always a pleasure to play Thornton Watlass and we look forward to the return fixture.
MOM – D. Brown – Excellent bowling and plenty of turn bamboozling batsmen and keepers alike.
